The SmartBlue Transilluminator works well with the most widely used safe DNA stains. The majority of green fluorophores, such as Accuris' SmartGlow™, SYBR Green, SYBR Safe, SYBR Gold, GelStar, and GelGreen, can be activated by the blue light it emits at a wavelength of 465 nm. EtBr can also be excited with the SmartBlue. DNA exposed at this wavelength does not cause molecular harm and has a considerably higher efficiency for downstream cloning than even brief UV light exposures. Additionally, visible blue light is less harmful to users' skin and eyes.*

Two-position filter cover: Although the SmartBlue transilluminator does not need any particular shielding, it is necessary to filter the light in order to see the dyes. The bands can be easily seen because the amber cover, which sits on top of the viewing surface and gel, blocks off blue light. To make it simple to reach the gel for band excision, the cover can be angled at a 60o angle. The filter cover can be readily removed entirely for documentation.

The SmartBlue illuminator's blue light is effectively blocked by our E4000-VG viewing glasses, enabling clear visibility of the fluorescing DNA bands without the filter cover in place. For users who routinely remove DNA bands from gels, these practical glasses are advised.

Engineered diffusers and filters create an incredibly evenly lighted viewing surface with UI technology, bright, clear images. Gels can be used to see DNA bands even in low-light conditions. Compared to images produced by epi-illuminators, which illuminate from the sides, those produced by the SmartBlue Transilluminator are brighter and more evenly distributed.

Reliable, durable and long lasting: An array of super bright LEDs with a long, 30,000 hour service life provide the light source for the SmartBlue Transilluminator. Unlike those in a UV transilluminator, the filters in the SmartBlue will not solarize and degrade in performance over time. Gel bands can be excised directly on the scratch resistant, glass viewing surface. To save energy, the power switch includes an automatic 5 minute shutoff. The SmartBlue Transilluminator is covered by a 2 year warranty.

* The SmartBlue product uses high intensity LED lights. Although the visible blue wavelength is significantly safer than UV light, it is recommended to not stare directly at the viewing surface without the amber cover in place.
